The Dallas Baptist University Track and Field Teams traveled to Stephenville, Texas, to take part in the Tarleton State University Invitational this past Thursday, March 15. Overall the Patriots came away with two victories and a great start to the Outdoor Track and Field Season.
Senior Hannah Steffan led the way for the Lady Patriots in the Women’s 1500m. Steffan, who won the 2010 NCCAA National Championship in the 3000m, led from start to finish and came across the line at 4:45.54 for the victory. Not far behind Steffan in fourth place, was Junior Tabbitha Ashford who ran 4:52.62. Senior Ashley Alford set a personal best of 4:59.34 and finished in seventh place, while Sophomore Linet Kibet also placed in the top ten with her time of 5:03.03.
The second victory of the night came in the Women’s 5k as Senior Laura Mucho ran to a time of 17:46.75. Mucho also led from start to finish and came away with her first victory for the 2010 season. Other Patriot runners were Senior Lacey Morrison, Junior Dannielle Nunley, Sophomore Laura Schaffner, and Freshman Susan Tanui.
Leading the Men as he has done all season was Senior Felix Rodriguez. Rodriguez placed fourth overall in the Men’s 5k with a time of 15:17.24. Following behind Rodriguez in ninth place was Sophomore John Millsap who ran 15:32.78. Freshman Jesse Benes set a personal best by running 16:26.53 which was good enough for 16th place.
“It was a really good day overall, given the weather conditions,” said assistant coach Matt Hansen. “The ladies in the 1500m ran extremely tough and Laura Mucho ran a very gutsy race in terrible wind to win the 5k. It was a very good way to start the 2010 Outdoor Season.”
The Patriots will be back in action on March 20 as they take part in the Dr. Pepper Invitational hosted by Baylor University.
