The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Baseball Team improved to 18-14 on the season after defeating the University of Evansville on Saturday afternoon. After losing to the Purple Aces on Thursday and Friday, the Patriots avoided the series sweep with the 8-2 win.
Senior Ryan Millard picked up the win for the Patriots and moved to 3-1 on the season after pitching two and two thirds innings, allowing no runs and no hits, and striking out one.
After three scoreless innings to start the game, Evansville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Nate Smith scored a run with his sacrifice fly to right field.
The Patriots responded in the top of the fifth, knotting the game at 1-1. Freshman Austin Elkins led off with a double to left center and later scored on a throwing error by the Evansville short stop.
Senior Ryan Enos and Junior Tyler Robbins each singled to lead off the sixth, and Freshman Duncan McAlpine advanced both runners with his sacrifice bunt. Senior Travis Meiners stepped to the plate with two runners on and singled to left field, scoring Enos, and giving DBU a 2-1 lead. Elkins then cleared the bases with his fifth home run of the season, making it a 5-1 lead for the Patriots.
Elkins came through again in the eighth when his single scored McAlpine who had reached on a single, and Robbins who led off the inning with a double, making it 7-1.
After the Purple Aces added a run in the bottom of the inning, Junior Jason Krizan capped off the game for the Patriots with his sacrifice fly in the ninth, scoring Senior Austin Knight, and sealing the 8-2 victory.
The Patriots will return Patriot Field on Wednesday, April 14, for a home contest against Texas Tech University. DBU lost the first game against the Red Raiders, 5-8, back on March 2. Wednesday’s game is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
