Diamond Belles

Welcome and Mission Statement

2009-2010 Diamond Belles

As fans enter Patriot Field they will be greeted by an organization of young women on the DBU campus, the Diamond Belles. These servant leaders will assist the baseball team by encouraging baseball attendance, supporting student athlete recruitment and performing volunteer community service and ministry in the Dallas metropoloitian area.

In its eighth year, the 24 member group will participate in community activities such as: DBU Turkey Trot and the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure. They also coordinate a shoebox wrapping party in which all athletic teams are invited to participate in wrapping over 200 Christmas gift boxes for Franklin Graham's Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child.

In the spring, the Diamond Belles will participate in DBU's Spring Sing variety show, serve as hostess at the annual baseball banquet and at the DBU Invitational southwest Diamond Classic baseball Tournament. The Belles are looking forward to the many service opportunities. The Diamond Belles will be also support the Patriot Baseball Team by managing the Patriot concession stand, assisting in the press box, maintaining ticket sales for all Patriot home games. In addition to these responsibilities, the Diamond Belles serve as official ambassadors to student-athlete recruits who are considering attending Dallas Baptist University.

“What a great opportunity the Diamond Belles have as devoted Christian women to serve the DBU family and athletic programs by promoting overall school spirit and athletic involvement,” the coordinator of Diamond Belles said. “We are very excited to be an active part in leading the DBU campus by enhancing the athletic experience.”

Mission Statement

A sisterhood of believers whose purpose is to provide support to student athletes, faculty/staff, students, and the community, through ministry, servant leadership, and discipleship; to encourage DBU spirit through campus promotion and recruitment; and to mature together through the pursuit of moral, intellectual and spiritual development.

Athletes of the Month

Kayla Marshall

Cheerleading

Kayla Marshall is the Female Athlete Spotlight for the month of March. Marshall is a junior from Garland, Texas and is a member of the 2009-2010 Patriot Cheerleading Squad.

Marshall is a graduate from Dallas Christian School in Garland, Texas and is currently in her second year at DBU as a Patriot Cheerleader. She has excelled both on the court as a cheerleader and in the classroom as a student. Her performances have granted her the opportunity to graduate early with a bachelor degree in psychology in August of 2010 to begin her career as a Children’s Minister.

While at DBU, Kayla has had a heart for serving the community. She has given her time and efforts as an avid contributor in the local community by serving in the children’s ministry at both the Fellowship First Baptist Church in Royce City, Texas, and New Liberty Baptist Church in Garland, Texas for the past two years.

Marshall has also participated in many community service projects with the Patriot Cheerleaders including partnering with First Baptist Church in Canton, Texas to provide child care for a local women’s ministry, participating in the DFW Greet the Troops program, and conducting cheerleading clinics while on the DBU Global Sports Mission Initiative mission trip to Seoul, South Korea in 2009.

“Kayla has been a great contributor to the Patriot Cheer Team. She has served as a base and a back-spot and has excelled in both roles for a stunt group. Kayla has the heart of a servant; she is using her love for children as a ministry for the Lord. Seeing her serve with the team at different service projects has been such a blessing. Her love and sweet spirit are contagious and bless everyone she comes in contact with. Kayla will be missed in this upcoming year, but we have been grateful to have her part of the team these last two years,” said Head Cheer Coach Skyla Alvarado.

Jordan McGowen

Men's Basketball

Jordan McGowen is the Male Athlete Spotlight of the Month for March. McGowen is a Sophomore Business Management Major from Kingwood, Texas and a member of the Patriot Basketball Team.

The 2008-2009 Co-Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year, McGowen was recently selected to the All-Heartland Conference First Team, for his play in conference action this season.

McGowen finished off a stellar second season, averaging 14.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in conference play. He recorded three double-doubles on the season and was only one rebound away in five other contests. His best performance of the year came against UT-Permian Basin when he recorded 18 points, 17 rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
