Cougars Outlast Patriots With 8-7 Win

Box Score

The Dallas Baptist Patriot Baseball Team faced the Washington State Cougars Tuesday night in the second game of their two-day series at Bailey Brayton Field in Pullman. Capturing an early lead, the Cougars held on to defeat the Patriots, 8-7, avenging yesterday's 13-4 loss. DBU falls to 8-5 on the season.

Junior Jordan Staples got the start for the Patriots and pitched three and a third innings, allowing four runs on four hits, while Junior Michael Smith was dealt the loss after pitching two and a third innings and allowing four runs on three hits.

Washington State took an early 2-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the first, but DBU responded in the second, cutting the lead in half. After Junior Ryan Behmanesh led off with a walk and advanced to second on Junior Landon Anderson's groundout, Junior Kenny Hatcher doubled to left center, scoring Behmanesh, and making it a 2-1 game.

The Cougars increased their lead in the bottom of the second, scoring another pair of runs. Derek Jones' double down the right field line off of Staples scored two runs and gave WSU a 4-1 lead.

DBU rallied in the fifth to take their first lead of the night, scoring four runs to take a 5-4 advantage. Junior Joel Hutter scored the first run of the inning with his RBI single to left that pushed Senior Tyler Robbins across the plate. The Patriots then loaded the bases after Behmanesh reached on a walk and Anderson was hit by a pitch.

With the bases loaded and only one out, Hatcher came up big once again for the Patriots as he delivered a three-RBI double to left center, giving DBU a 5-4 advantage.

The lead didn't last long for the Patriots as the home team responded with a four-run inning of their own in the bottom of the fifth. The Cougars used three hits to drive in four more runs and make it an 8-5 game.

After a scoreless sixth by both teams, DBU added one run in the seventh on a Cougar error, and one in the eighth, trimming their deficit to one, 7-8.

However, Washington State's closer picked up the save for the Cougars as ended the ninth with a strikeout and a pair of groundouts.

The Patriots will have tomorrow off as they prepare for a three-game series against the University of Washington later this week. Game one against the Huskies will be Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
