Patriots Eliminated from Santa Clara Super Regional Tournament

SANTA CLARA, CA. – After dropping the opening game of the Super Regional Tournament against California on Saturday afternoon, the Dallas Baptist Patriot Baseball Team saw their historic season come to an end after falling to the Golden Bears, 6-2, on Sunday evening. The 2011 Fort Worth Regional Champions ended their season with a 42-20 overall record.

For the second consecutive game against DBU, the Golden Bears crushed a first inning, multi-run homerun. In the third at-bat in the bottom of the first, Chadd Krist drilled a two-run homerun over the left field wall to give the Golden Bears an early 2-0 lead.

The Patriots responded in the top of the second inning as Junior Kenny Hatcher doubled down the right field line, scoring Junior Ryan Behmanesh, who reached base on balls, making the score 2-1.

Cal-Berkeley extended their lead in the bottom of the second inning as lead-off hitter, Austin Booker, doubled to center field to score Derek Campbell from first base to extend the Golden Bear lead to 3-1.

In the top of the third inning, the Patriots cut in to the Golden Bears' lead once again when Junior Landon Anderson scored from first base on a line shot to left field by Junior Joel Hutter, making the score 3-2.

The Golden Bears came out swinging in the bottom of the fourth inning as Chad Bunting doubled down the left field to reach base. Two batters later, Golden Bear second baseman, Derek Campbell, doubled on a deep shot to center field, scoring Bunting from second and increasing the Cal-Berkeley lead, 4-2.

Shortly after Junior Michael Smith came in to the game to relieve Stafford in the fourth inning, Tony Renda slapped a single to right field to score Campbell, giving the Golden Bears a demanding 5-2 lead. Stafford gave up five runs, four earned, through three and two thirds innings, while striking out three Golden Bears.

Cal-Berkeley delivered three more hits in the bottom of the sixth inning from Booker, Renda, and Krist. Krist recorded his second hit and third RBI of the game on his single up the middle, as the Golden Bears stretched their lead, 6-2.

Senior closer Chris Haney entered the ballgame in the sixth inning for the Patriots to relieve Smith. With two outs and the bases loaded, Haney struck out Mitch Delfino to end the inning. Smith pitched one and two thirds innings on the night allowing only one run while recording one strike out. Haney recorded two and two thirds scoreless innings on the night for his longest relief outing of the season, allowing only three hits while striking out five batters.

The Patriots were shut down through the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings as the Cal-Berkeley Golden Bears issued DBU their season ending loss, and advanced to the 2011 College World Series.
