Former Dallas Baptist standout, Ryan Goins, earned a promotion to the Toronto Blue Jays Major League club today. The news comes following an injury to Blue Jays' second baseman Maicer Izturis, who was added to the 15-day disabled list this morning. Goins joins the team today and will be in uniform when Toronto plays at Yankee Stadium this afternoon.
Â
Goins, who played at DBU from 2007-09, becomes the third player from the Patriots' 2009 draft class to break into the Major Leagues this season. Brandon Bantz became the first member of the '09 class to earn a promotion when he cracked into the Seattle Mariners lineup on June 8th. Victor Black was called up by the Pittsburgh Pirates and made his Major League debut on July 25th. Only the University of North Carolina has seen more players (4), that advanced to the Major Leagues from the 2009 draft class.
Â
During his three year stint at DBU, Goins smashed 32 homeruns and drove in 117 runs. His 22 round-trippers in 2009 still ranks as the most in the Patriot program since DBU joined the Division I ranks in 2004.Â
Â
Goins has spent five seasons in the Blue Jays Minor League system, with his most recent stint this year at Triple-A Buffalo. In 111 games this season, Goins hit .257 with 6 homeruns, 46 RBI's, and his 22 doubles were the second most on the club.Â
Â
Goins arrives in New York today, as the Blue Jays prepare to face Andy Pettite at 12:05 pm. Following today's game, Toronto heads to Houston for a three game series with the Astros at Minute Maid Park. Once Goins enters a game for the Jays, he will become the 14th player in Dallas Baptist baseball history to play in the Major Leagues. Â
