The Patriots from Dallas Baptist University defended their home court on Wednesday night, when they defeated Southern Arkansas University, 65-58. With the win, DBU improves to 3-3 on the season and have a 2-1 record at home, while the Muleriders fell to 3-4 overall.
The Patriots jumped out to an early 12-5 lead but could not hold the lead after the Muleriders went on a quick 7-0 run to tie the score. After the quick run by SAU the game settled down with both teams trading baskets until there was two minutes left in the first half when DBU closed out the half on a 10-0 run, leaving the score at half time 29-26 in favor of the Patriots.
DBU continued right where they left off in the first half by opening up the second half with 13-3 run to open up a 11 point lead. However, the Muleriders refused to quit and chipped at the lead the rest of the half closing it to five at one point, but timely shooting and free throws for the Patriots allowed them to close out the game.
The Patriots on the night shot 47% from the field, 16% from the three-point line, and 75% from the charity line, while holding the Muleriders to 35% shooting from the field and 20% from the three-point line.
DBU spread the ball around the court, including nine players scoring points and four players scoring in double figures. Leading the way for the Patriots was Junior Manny Montano, who scored 14 points, including a huge dunk off an inbounds play, he also grabbed eight boards and had two steals.
The Patriots will look to win two in a row on Saturday, December 9, 2006, when they welcome Grand Canyon Unversity to the Burg Center. The non-conference game will tip off at 7:00.
