The Rattler's from St. Mary's University uses 60.7% shooting from the field to defeat DBU, Saturday afternoon, 85-80. With the loss DBU drops it's second in a row and falls to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Rattler's use the win to improve to 8-6 overall and a first place tie in the conference with a 2-0 mark.
Offense was the theme of the day with both teams struggling on the defensive side of the ball. The Patriots, who continue to improve on offense each game, shot 55% from the field and three-point line. The Rattler's who seemed to have a little more fire power today, hit nine three pointers, shooting 56% from beyond the arch.
The Patriots trailed by eleven at half time but refused to let STMU run them out of the gym and cut the lead to four points at one point in the second half. The Rattler's Jarvis Lee refused to let DBU get back in the game by hitting 7 of 11 three-point shots on the day.
St. Mary's, who used the momentum off of Lee's shooting extended their lead to nine points, which ended up being to large of a lead for the Patriots to overcome. Head Coach Blake Flickner said, "We were better offensively, but we had some key lapses on the defensive side of the ball that ended up costing us in the end."
DBU was led by Junior Dwight Coleman, who scored 25 points, off of 11 of 13 shooting, he also added four rebounds and four assists. Junior Nick Michels contributed with 19 points, while Sophomore Justin Pinckney added 14 points and three assists.
The Patriots will be in action again Monday, January 15, when the welcome St. Edwards University, to the Burg Center. The Patriots will look forward to the rematch against the Hilltopper's, after a tough loss to them on December 30, 88-83.
