The Dallas Baptist University Men's Basketball Team ended their five game losing streak with an impressive win over the University of Incarnate Word Monday night. DBU won the game in dramatic fashion 72-71. With the win, DBU improves to 4-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while UIW fell to 5-8 and 1-1.
The Patriots jumped out of the gate early pushing their lead to 15 points in the first half. However, the Cardinals refused to quit and chipped away at the lead point by point closing the score to 37-32 at half time.
The first half saw Sophomore Justin Pinckney hit four of six shots and score 10 points in 13 minutes of play. Pinckney made it a point from the time he stepped onto the court to be aggressive and found himself in a rhythm that the Cardinals could not stop.
The second half proved to be one of the most exciting halves of play for the Patriots during the 2007 season. Again, the Patriots extended their lead to 17 points with eleven minutes to play. The determined Cardinals refused to quit and again clawed their way all the way back to make the score in favor of DBU 72-71 with 13 seconds left to play.
The Cardinals called a timeout and set up a play to take the final shot of the game. With two seconds left on the clock Jason Gant of UIW drove the lane and pulled up for the game winning shot but Junior Manny Montano came out of nowhere to block the shot and secure the victory for the Patriots.
Leading the Patriots once again tonight was Junior Nick Michels, who scored 22 points, dished out three assists, and grabbed five rebounds. Junior Brandon Wash added ten points and six boards, while Pinckney finished the night with 14 points and two rebounds.
DBU will look to make it two wins in a row over UIW when they travel to San Antonio, TX, on January 11, to play the Cardinals for the final time during the regular season. The opening tip off will be at 7:00.
