Patriots Roll to Victory over UIW in First Heartland Conference Game

The Patriots Men's Basketball Team is off to an hot start in the Heartland Conference after winning their first game of conference play against the University of the Incarnate Word.  DBU defeated the Cardinals on Saturday afternoon, 87-81.  With the victory, the Patriots improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0, while UIW fell to 3-3 and 0-1.

DBU held a 42-34 lead at the half after they hit 50 percent of their field goals, including hitting five of 10 three point field goals.  They were able to hold UIW to only 46 percent shooting and 10 percent from beyond the arch. 

UIW picked up their shooting in the second half and cut the Patriots lead.  The Patriots, however, managed enough defensive stops to hold onto their six point lead and secure their first conference victory of the season. 

The Patriots shot 50 percent for the game, 42 percent from beyond the arch, and hit 14 of 22 free throw attempts.  While, UIW hit 48 percent of their shots, 32 percent from three point line, and 67 percent of their free throws.

Senior Dwight Coleman led the way for the Patriots after he hit seven of 11 shots, scoring 21 points and pulling down nine boards.  Junior Brandon Wash had a big game with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Senior Nick Michels contributed with 15 points.

DBU will be in action again when they travel to Ada, Oklahoma, to take part in the East Central Classic.  The Patriots will play on December 17, at 6:00 and December 18, at 2:00.
