Oklahoma Panhandle State University defeats the Patriots Basketball team, 82-79, on Saturday night in Goodwell, Oklahoma. DBU led the entire game until about three minutes left in the game, when OPSU went on a run to help them secure the victory. With the loss DBU fell to 5-13 overall and 1-5 in conference, while the Aggies improved to 8-9 and 1-2.
The Patriots held a 48-43 lead at the half after they hit on 52 percent of their shots from the field and connected on all five free throw attempts. DBU was hitting on all cylinders in the first half and took all the momentum into the locker room.
The second half turned out to be a completely different game from the first half. The Patriots, who could not seem to miss a shot in the first half, could not buy a bucket in the second half of play. DBU shot their way out of the game, after they only hit on 34 percent of their shots, including only hitting one of 13 three-point attempts.
DBU did a good job of protecting the ball; only committing 14 turnovers, however, 11 of the turnovers came in the second half, with several key turnovers occurring at the end of the game. OPSU took full advantage of the turnovers and where able to capture their first Heartland Conference victory.
DBU was led by Senior Manny Montano, who scored 20 points and pulled down three boards, while Junior Shelby Lewis scored 12 points and dished out eight assists. Senior Nick Michels scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Senior Dwight Coleman contributed with 11 points and five boards.
The Patriots will be back in action again on January 28, when they travel to Odessa, Texas, to take on UT-Permian Basin.
