Patriots Beat Midwestern State Mustangs

The Patriots traveled to Wichita Falls, Texas Saturday night to take on the Midwestern State University Mustangs at D.L. Ligon Coliseum to open the 2008-2009 season. The Patriots came from behind to capture their first win of the season and start the year in good fashion with a 1-0 record.

As the game progressed, the Mustangs started to pull away and at the end of the first half Midwestern's Junior Philip Homere had a key layup and a 3-pointer to give the Mustangs a five point edge over the Patriots. Both teams went into the locker room with Midwestern State leading by nine points over the Patriots, 43-34. MSU's Senior Guard Quincy Sarpy led the Mustangs with a game high 20 points and 7 rebounds.

The Patriots came out on fire in the second half hitting the Mustangs quick with a 17-3 run led by Senior Shelby Lewis (12 points, 9 assists, 8 rebounds, and 6 steals), Senior Justin Pinckney (6 points), and Junior Trent Brownlee (6 points) to gain the lead 51-46.

The Patriots fought hard throughout the remaining of the second half, and the Mustangs were not able to regain the lead. Strong offensive performances off the Patriot bench from Sophomore Dean Pele (18 points, 9 rebounds) and Freshman Jordan McGowan (17 points, 7 rebounds) who combined for 35 total points helped propel DBU over the top and come home with an 88-83 victory. Sophomore Braxton Adamson led the rest of the Patriots by scoring 14 points in the win.

Head Coach Blake Flickers said about the game, "This win was a great way to kick off the season. I am proud of our team and how we stepped up to the challenge, especially in the second half. We had numerous players contribute to the win, and I am excited about the key performances we received from our young guys. I am thrilled to see what our team can accomplish this season!"

The Patriots are back in action Thursday, November 20, 2008, as they travel to Abilene, Texas to take on the Wildcats from Abilene Christian University . Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
