The Dallas Baptist University Patriots hosted the Abilene Christian University Wildcats Tuesday night for a thrilling match up. Tough defense and determination helped the Patriots come out on top 77-65 to improve their season record to 5-0.
The first half was a hard fought battle for both the Patriots and the Wildcats. Wildcat Dante Adams gave his team 13 early points in the half to help stay close to the Patriots. The two teams were in a dead lock at 35 with only 38 seconds to go when Junior Bryan Baumann for the Patriots hit three crucial free throws to end the half and take his team into halftime with a slight edge over the Wildcats 38-35.
Senior Shelby Lewis drained a three pointer then kissed another off the glass for two to extend the Patriots lead to eight early in the second half. Lewis finished with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and three steals on the night.
Sharp shooting from Wildcats Dejan Sencanski (13 points, 3 rebounds) and Dante Adams (20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals) helped gain the lead for ACU half way through the second 48-46.
Tight defense by DBU produced late Wildcat turnovers that the Patriots were able to capitalize on to extend their lead to quick 14 points.
Freshman Jordan McGowan for the Patriots turned in another good performance off the bench to post the team high 15 points and 7 rebounds. By shooting 4-6 from the field, 1-2 from behind the arc, and being perfect from the foul line (6-6), McGowan gave DBU the spark it needed in the end to finish off the Wildcats 77-65.
