The Patriots traveled to Laredo, Texas, on Tuesday to take on the Texas A&M International Dustdevils in Heartland Conference play. DBU was able to capture a win in a high scoring shootout, 111-104. With the win, the Patriots move their record to 12-2 for the season, and 3-1 in Heartland Conference play.
The Patriots started the game on fire as they went on a 13 to 4 run in the first four minutes over the Dustdevils. Strong play from A&M's Sean Tucker and Derek Barnes brought the Dustdevils back into the game and they were able to gain the lead and carry it all the way into the half, 57-55. Tucker ended the night with 18 points, and two rebounds.
The Dustdevils stayed on top of the Patriots the entire second half as A&M's Barnes led the attack scoring 14 points in the half. He ended the night with a game high 27 points. He also was able to add seven assists, two rebounds, and two steals during the loss.
The Patriots were able to reach the foul line numerous times throughout the game. The team shot 83 percent from the stripe as they went 40 for 48 on the night. The Dustdevils only had 23 attempts from the stripe.
Six Patriots were able to score in double digits in the win. Junior Bryan Baumann led the Patriots in scoring as he was able to shoot 7 for 10 from the floor and connect on 5 for 6 from behind the arc to end the night with 22 points. He also added four assists, three rebounds, and two steals in the win. Junior Eddie Gloviak was on the heels of Baumann as he scored 21 points. He also grabbed four rebounds, and had two assists on the night.
Senior Shelby Lewis ended the night three rebounds shy of his first triple double. Lewis shot 5 for 10 from the floor and 4 for 6 from the foul line to put in 14 points. He added 10 assists and had a game high seven rebounds in the win over the Dustdevils. Lewis has been able to average an impressive 16 points and 9.6 boards for the last three games.
Junior Trent Brownlee helped his team out in a big way, as he was able to score 14 points and pull down six boards. He also added two steals and one assist. Freshman
Jordan McGowen finished the night off with 12 points, five rebounds, one assist, and one block.
Both teams had tremendous shooting nights, as the Patriots were able to shoot an impressive 60.8 percent from the floor while the Dustdevils ended the game shooting 50 percent from the floor.
The Dustdevils looked to have the game in control, but with 3:24 left in the game Patriot Sophomore Braxton Adamson connected from behind the arc to put his team ahead, 98-95. The Patriots did not look back as they held onto the lead for the remainder of the game to finish off the Dustdevils 111-104, and move their overall season record to 12-2, and Heartland Conference record to 3-1. Adamson ended the night with 15 points, three assists, two rebounds, and two steals.
The Patriots are back in action Thursday, January 15, as they travel to San Antonio, Texas, to take on the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals in a Heartland Conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
