Patriots Suffer First Home Loss, 94-89

The Patriots hosted the St. Edward's University Hilltoppers Monday night at Burg Center. The Hilltoppers came out on top as they defeated the Patriots 94-89. With the loss, the Patriots drop to 12-4 on the season and 3-3 in Conference.

St. Edward's got out to an early lead as St. Edward's Jannik Zimmer connected on three free throws. Zimmer finished the night with 14 points, six rebounds, and two assists. The Hilltopper's were able to stretch their lead to 12, but could not hold the Patriots off as they came charging back to get back within five late in the half.

Hilltopper's Taylor Mullenax led his team in scoring as he put up 17 on the Patriots defense with 11 coming in the second half. He added five boards, two assists, and one block on the night. Mullenax and the Hilltoppers went into halftime leading the Patriots 42-34.

The Patriots came out of halftime strong as they took the lead over the Hilltoppers, 54-53. It was not long before Jeff Minor from St. Edwards hit a highly contested jumper to take back the lead for the Hilltoppers.

The Hilltoppers held off the Patriot attack in the end with key free throws as they give DBU their fourth loss of the season, and first home loss of the year.

The Patriot offense was led by Senior Shelby Lewis as he scored 15 points, assisted his team eight times, and grabbed seven boards. Sophomore Braxton Adamson led all scorers on the night as he knocked down 7 for 11 from the floor to score 18 points. He also was able to bring down four boards, and add one steal in the loss.

Junior Eddie Gloviak also had a big night scoring 17 points and grabbing four boards. He also added one assist and one block in the game. Junior Bryan Baumann rounded out the five Patriots scoring double digits as he posted 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, and one block.

St. Edward's committed 28 fouls on the night, but the Patriots were not able to capitalize on the opportunity as they were only able to connect on 20 of 35 from the charity stripe.

With the win, the Hilltoppers move to 10-6 on the season, and 4-1 in Heartland Conference play. The Hilltoppers have been able to defeat the Patriots each time they have met. The series count is at 8-0 in favor of the Hilltoppers. The Patriots move to 12-4 on the season, and 3-3 in Conference play.

The Patriots are back in action Thursday, January 22, 2009, as they host the Newman University Jets in Burg Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
