Patriots Continue to Struggle with Third Straight Conference Loss

The Patriots hosted the Newman University Jets in the Burg Center on Thursday night for a Heartland Conference match-up. The Jets were able to pull out an overtime win over the Patriots giving them their third straight conference loss, 92-88. With the loss, the Patriots fall to 12-5 for the season, and 3-4 in conference play.

The Patriots jumped out to a quick five point lead over the Jets to start the game as Junior Bryan Baumann connected on a shot from behind the arc. The DBU offense didn't stop and looked to half the Jets down and out as they led by 11 midway through the first half, but the Jets were able to come storming back as Stephan Williams drained two straight jumpers to gain the lead by one, 37-36. Williams ended the night with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists, one block, and one steal.

Patriot Senior Shelby Lewis was able to hit a late shot to give DBU the lead going into halftime, 41-37. Lewis ended the night with seven points, two assists, one rebound, and one steal.

The second half was a physical half between the Patriots and Jets. Neither team could manage an easy shot. The Patriot offense was led by Junior Bryan Baumann as he scored 20 points on the night, shooting 6 for 10 from the floor and 5 for 8 from behind the arc. He also was able to grab five rebounds while adding five assists, one block, and one steal in the loss.

A player that contributed on both sides of the ball for the Patriots was Junior Eddie Gloviak. Gloviak posted a double double scoring 18 points shooting 7 for 14 from the floor and a perfect 4 for 4 from the charity stripe. He led the Patriots on the glass as he grabbed 11 boards on the night. He also contributed four assists and two blocks to the stat column during the game.

Newman's Jarvis Jackson drained two last second free throws to tie the game at 80 and send the two teams into extra time.

The five minute overtime period started with Patriot Sophomore Braxton Adamson connecting on a three point shot. On the night, Adamson had 19 points, two assists, and one steal. The Jets fired back quickly as Jake Darby and Stephen Williams both hit jump shots to boost them in front of the Patriots, 84-83, halfway through the overtime period. Darby and Williams ended the night with 24 and 19 points respectively.

Both teams were scrambling for shots before Junior Baumann for the Patriots connected from behind the arc to tie the game at 88 with only 1:49 left. The Jets were able to get the ball for an inbounds play underneath their basket with only 22 seconds left on the clock. The Patriots were unable to stop Newman's Jaray Mathews on the inbounds play as he put the go-ahead points on the board for the Jets, with the assist coming from a Jake Darby pass. Mathews posted a double double scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds on the night.

The Patriots missed a quick jumper, and had to immediately foul to stop the clock. Darby for the Jets made two free throws to put the Jets up by four and seal the deal for the Jets. The buzzer sounded with the Jets ahead 92-88 to give the Patriots their third straight conference loss.

With the loss, the Patriots fall to 12-5 for the season, and 3-4 in Heartland Conference play. The Jets improve their record to 9-7 on the year, and 3-2 in the Heartland Conference.

The Patriots are back in action as they host Oklahoma Panhandle State University in the Burg Center on Saturday, January 24, 2009. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
