The Patriots hosted the Aggies from Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Burg Center for a Heartland Conference match-up. Going into the game, the Patriots were looking to break their three game conference losing streak. The Patriots win in convincing fashion against the Aggies, 89-69, to improve their record to 13-5 for the season, and 4-4 in the Heartland Conference.
The Patriots came out on fire in the opening minutes of the game as they went on a 18-3 run against the Aggies. In the first half DBU was able to shoot a blistering 58.6 percent from the floor on 17 of 29 shooting, and 46.2 percent from behind the arc as they went 6 for 13. Patriot defense was strong as they held the Aggies to a 27.6 percent field goal percentage in the first half.
The Patriots extended their lead to 27 with one minute remaining in the half, but the Aggies hit a pair of free throws and a late jumper to end the half and trail the Patriots, 49-26.
The second half was no different as the Patriot defense held the Aggies off to cruise to their fourth conference win, 89-69.
Sophomore Braxton Adamson led the Patriot offense as he finished the day with a game high 24 points as he went 7 for 11 from the floor, and shot 4 for 7 from behind the arc. Adamson also had three rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block in the win.
Four other Patriots scored in double digits along with every player posting points in the victory. Freshman
Jordan McGowen scored 15 points, and grabbed 7 rebounds during the game. He also added one steal in the win. Senior Justin Pinckney and Junior Trent Brownlee scored 11 points a piece in the win over the Aggies. Pinckney grabbed four rebounds, and had three assists on the day. Brownlee led the Patriots on the glass as he had eight rebounds (seven defensive) in the win. Junior Bryan Baumann rounded out the five Patriots scoring in double digits as he connected on 4 for 7 from the floor and 2 for 5 from three to have 10 points. Baumann also collected four rebounds, four assists, and one block in the game.
With the win, the Patriots ended their three game losing streak to move to 13-5 for the season, and even up their conference record at 4-4. The Aggies drop to 4-13 on the season, and 1-5 in Heartland Conference play.
”Today was one of our best defensive efforts of the year as a team. Guys really rotated well and supported each other. Offensively we really shared the ball and made the extra pass. All around it was a great team effort,” Head Coach Blake Flickner said.
The Patriots continue Heartland Conference play as they look for their fifth conference win when they host the UT-Permian Basin Falcons on Monday, January 26, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. in the Burg Center.
