The Patriots hosted the UT-Permian Basin Falcons on Monday night in the Burg Center for a Heartland Conference match-up. The Patriots captured their second straight victory at home as they defeated the Falcons, 89-70.
The Patriot offensive was able to build a double digit lead on the Falcons with 7:49 left in the first half as they shot an impressive 63 percent from the floor going 17 for 27. They also connected on 5 of 7 from behind the arc to post a 71.4 percent 3-pt. field goal percentage for the half. The Patriots extended their lead to 15 to go into the locker room up 45-30 over the Falcons.
All five starters for the Patriots were able to score in double digits. Junior Bryan Baumann led the Patriot offensive charge as he scored a team high 21 points. Baumann was able to shoot 9 for 14 from the floor and 3 for 5 from behind the arc in the win. He also contributed four rebounds, four assists, and one steal for his team on the night.
Freshman
Jordan McGowen and Sophomore Braxton Adamson both scored 15 points, and had six assists a piece on the night. Adamson was able to grab five rebounds, while McGowen had four (all defensive).
Junior Eddie Gloviak and Shelby Lewis rounded out the double digit scorers as they scored 14 and 12 points respectively. Gloviak added six rebounds and four assists in the win. Lewis was also big on the glass as he grabbed six rebounds, all coming on the defensive side of the ball.
The second half started with the Patriots going on a 16-5 run to put the Falcons in the hole by 26. DBU was able to finish the win off as they shot 65.5 percent from the field. The Falcons fought hard and chipped their way back within 10 from the Patriots as UTPB's Quintan Lipkins led the way scoring a game high 22 points on the night. Lipkins shot 50 percent on the night as he went 7 for 14 from the field and 6 for 12 from behind the arc.
The Patriot defense did not allow the Falcons to get any closer as they finished off UTPB for their fifth Heartland Conference win in a score of 89-70.
With the win, the Patriots move to 14-5 on the season, and 5-4 in Heartland Conference play. The Falcons drop to 7-10 for the season, and 3-3 in conference.
The Patriots are back in action as they host Johnson &Wales University on Friday, January 30, 2009, in the Burg Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
