The Patriots traveled to San Antonio, Texas, Saturday afternoon to face St. Mary's University at Bill Greehey Arena for their second conference game. The Patriots were able to beat the Rattlers 72-67. With the win the Patriots move their record to 10-1, and 2-0 in Heartland Conference play.

The two teams were neck and neck throughout the entire game as the Patriots and Rattlers were playing tight defense down the stretch. The Patriots were able to go on a 9-4 run at the end of the first half to put them ahead 34-29.

St. Mary's Nick Morey had an impressive showing as he was able to score a team high 25 points on 11 of 16 from the floor. He posted a double double when he grabbed 11 boards while adding three blocks, three steals, and two assists. Morey's play was not enough to stop the Patriots attack as DBU shot 62.5 percent from behind the arc shooting 5 for 8 in the second half to capture their second conference win 72-67.

Strong play from Patriot Junior Bryan Baumann helped push DBU past St. Mary's, as he scored a game high 27 points, grabbed four rebounds, and added three steals. Baumann had a great day shooting as he went 10 for 13 from the floor going 5 for 7 from behind the arc.

Senior Shelby Lewis was able to add 14 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals in the Patriot win. Junior Trent Brownlee also added 11 points, one steal, and one rebound for the Patriots.

“This was a really tough, hard fought victory today. I'm very proud of our guys. It is hard to win, especially on the road, in conference, against a good team. St. Mary's is a very good team that will continually improve. We had some players make some big plays and the team really stuck together when we were down and their composure allowed them to execute well down the stretch to win the game,” Head Coach Blake Flickner said.

The Patriots are back in action Monday night January 5, 2009, as they travel to Austin, Texas, to take on the St. Edward's University Hilltoppers.
