Patriots Fall Short In Conference Game

The Patriots traveled to Austin, Texas, Monday night to take on the St. Edward's University Hilltoppers in Heartland Conference play. The Hilltoppers were able to hold on to a slight edge in the end to capture a win over the Patriots 89-88.

The Patriots were leading the Hilltoppers at the half 47-46, as they shot 57.1 percent from the floor with the Hilltoppers not far behind shooting 53.3 percent. Junior Eddie Gloviak and Junior Bryan Baumann combined for 20 of the Patriots 47 points in the half, as they posted 10 a piece.

Gloviak ended the night perfect from the floor shooting 5 for 5 scoring 13 points. He also helped his team by adding two assists and one board on the night. Baumann was able to finish off his night with 13 points, two rebounds, and one assist.

Both teams continued their impressive shooting nights in the second half as the Patriots ended the game with a field goal percentage of 59.2, and the Hilltoppers finished shooting 52.3 percent.

The Patriots ended the game with six players scoring in double digits, but the Hilltoppers tight defense and composure in the end helped them get the victory.

Hilltopper Reggie Shanks led his team with 15 points, three rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. In addition, guard Taylor Land for St. Edward's helped the Hilltoppers as he posted 13 assists, four points, four rebounds, and one steal in the win.

Patriot Senior Shelby Lewis helped lead the DBU attack down the stretch as he posted a double double scoring 14 points and assisting his teammates 10 times. Lewis also added four steals and two rebounds on the night. Freshman Jordan McGowen for the Patriots scored a game high 16 points, and had three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.

Shanks for SEU put the Hilltoppers ahead by one as he connected on a layup off a Taylor Land assist with only 25 seconds left in the game. DBU's Lewis had a chance to put the Patriots ahead, but was unable to convert on a last second shot. With the miss, the Hilltoppers were able to hold on to a one point lead to beat the Patriots 89-88. With the loss, DBU falls to 10-2 for the season, and 2-1 in Heartland Conference play. The Hilltoppers move to 7-5 for the season, and 1-0 in conference.

The Patriots are back in action Wednesday, January 7, as they host the East Central University Tigers in the Burg Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
