The Patriots hosted the East Central University Tigers Wednesday night in the Burg Center. The Patriots edged out the Tigers in the end to pull out the win 91-86. With the win, the Patriots move their record to 11-2 overall for the season, and stay at 2-1 in Heartland Conference play.
The Tigers pounced on the Patriots early as they went on a 12-2 run to start the game. The Patriots were not stunned long as Freshman starter
Jordan McGowen scored five straight points to move within five from the Tigers. McGowen shot 4 for 9 from the floor scoring 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds on the night. ECU held onto a small lead for the majority of the first half, but Senior Shelby Lewis for the Patriots connected from behind the arc to bump DBU up by one over the Tigers with 4:53 left in the half. The Patriots led going into the half 48-43.
Strong play from the Tigers tied the game at 67, midway through the second half. ECU's Dontae Figgs led all scorers with 30 points off 12 of 22 shooting. He also added four assists, one steal, and one rebound on the night. Justin Wilkerson for the Tigers also had an impressive night as he posted a double double scoring 20 points and grabbing 12 boards. He added seven assists, three blocks, and one steal for the Tigers in the loss.
ECU took the lead 74-73 with 8:42 left in the game, but Junior Heath Wiechman responded as he drained a jumper to regain the lead for DBU. Wiechman scored in double figures as he helped his team with 10 points, four rebounds, and one assist.
The Patriots were led by Senior Shelby Lewis on the offensive side of the ball as he was one assist shy of having back to back double doubles. Lewis was able to connect on 8 of 11 from the floor going 2 for 2 from behind the arc and shooting 2 for 3 from the foul line to score 20 points. He added nine assists and two rebounds to help the Patriots in the win.
Sophomore Braxton Adamson scored 19 points for the Patriots as 11 of those camein the second half as he went 3 for 4 from behind the arc to help DBU hold off the Tiger attack and finish with a victory, 91-86. With the win, the Patriots move to 11-2 for the season.
“I am proud of the guys and the way they played and persevered throughout the entire game tonight. We just got back from a long road trip, and to come back home and grab a win against a good East Central team says a lot about the quality of guys we have on this team,” Head Coach Blake Flickner said.
Other Patriot Notables: Junior Trent Brownlee (14 points, five rebounds, three steals, one assist), and Junior Bryan Baumann (nine points, two assists, one block, one steal).
The Patriots are back in action Tuesday, January 13, 2009, as they travel to Laredo, Texas, to face the Texas A&M International Dustdevils in Heartland Conference play. The tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
