The Patriots hosted the Lincoln University Blue Tigers Monday night in the Burg Center for a Heartland Conference match-up. The Patriots ended the game in convincing fashion breaking the century mark to defeat the Blue Tigers 104-63.
The Patriots forced the Blue Tigers into a hole as the DBU offense went on a 15-2 run to start the game. The Patriots did not stop there as they extended their lead to 16 with strong defensive play to lead the Blue Tigers into halftime 42-26. The DBU defense held Lincoln to a field goal percentage of only 34.6 % for the first half.
The Patriots came out in the second half on fire jumping to a 20 point lead with sharp shooting from Senior Justin Pinckney and Senior Shelby Lewis. Pinckney scored 16 points shooting 5-for-8 from the field. He added four rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal in the win. Lewis was able to score 10 points on the night. He did it on both sides of the ball with four assists, three rebounds, and three steals to go along with his 10 points.
The Patriots slowly shut down the Blue Tiger offense with tough defense grabbing a team total 13 steals throughout the game. Lincoln could not get any traction to mount an attack and were defeated handily by the Patriots, 104-63.
The Patriot offense was led by Sophomore Braxton Adamson and Freshman
Jordan McGowen who both had impressive performances on the night. Adamson led all scorers with 34 points in the win. He shot a blistering 79.6 % from the floor going 10-for-13, and 4-for-6 from behind the arc. Adamson turned in a perfect night from the charity stripe as he went 10-for-10. On the defensive side of the ball, Adamson grabbed four steals and two defensive rebounds in the win.
McGowen finished the night with 26 points and six rebounds, with 19 of his points coming in the second half. He also was perfect from the free throw line as he went 12-for-12.
"I'm really pleased with our team's effort and enthusiasm tonight. They have continued to play extremely hard and very unselfish. Things got a little emotional at a few spots, but our guys really kept their composure and I'm proud of them for that," Head Coach Blake Flickner said.
With the win, the Patriots capture their eighth straight win to improve their overall season record to 20-5 and 10-4 in Heartland Conference play. The Blue Tigers fall to 0-11 in conference and 3-19 for the season.
The Patriots are back in action on February 19, 2009, as they host the Dust Devils from Texas A&M International in the Burg Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
