Patriots Start 2009 Season in Style

The DBU Patriots started the 2009 season with a victory on Friday afternoon against Binghamton University by the score of 6-2 at Patriot Field.

Picking up the win for DBU was Junior Victor Black, improving to 1-0 on the season, pitching six innings, while scattering seven hits, striking out six and allowing zero walks to propel the Patriots to their first win on the season.

The Bearcats managed one run in the first inning off of Black, but Freshman Ryan Behmanesh tied the game in the third inning in his first collegiate at bat, by hitting a solo homerun to right center. Junior Ryan Enos followed with a solo homerun of his own to give DBU the 2-1 lead.

The Patriots added to their lead in the fifth inning, after Behmanesh walked, Freshman Ben Mrachek singled through the middle and Senior Clay Kelly added a RBI single. Enos and Thompson added RBI singles to push the lead to 5-1.

Binghamton added a run in the seventh inning, after Junior Brett Wade relieved Black and walked the bases loaded.

DBU added another run in the eighth, after Junior Ryan Goins singled to first and stole second and later scored on a RBI single by Senior Brandon Bantz.

Sophomore Chris Haney picked up the save for DBU, his first of the season.

Leading the Patriots at the plate was Kelly and Behmanesh, both finishing the day two for two with a RBI.

The Patriots and Binghamton resume action on Saturday afternoon at Patriot Field in doubleheader action beginning at noon.
