The DBU Patriots and Binghamton Bearcats split the Saturday doubleheader at Patriot Field, with Binghamton winning the first game 3-1 and the Patriots picking up the victory in game two by the score of 15-4. The Patriots improve to 2-1 on the season after winning two of the three games in the series.
In game one, Sophomore Jared Stafford was stuck with the loss pitching seven innings allowing one unearned run on one hit and striking out six, falling to 0-1 on the season.
The Bearcats managed one unearned run in the first inning off Stafford after a single, stolen base and an error, taking an early 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats managed to extend their lead on the Patriots with one earned and one unearned run off of Junior Michael LaCourse in the top of the eighth, leaving the score 3-0.
DBU finally got on the board in the bottom half of the eighth, after Sophomore Jason Krizan doubled and scored on a RBI single by Junior Ryan Goins, leaving the Patriots trailing 3-1.
In game two, Senior Chris McMullen picked up the win, pitching seven innings, scattering 10 hits, allowing four runs, two earned and striking out three.
The Patriots did not waste any time getting on the board in game two. Junior Ryan Enos singled to lead off the game and Goins walked, setting up a double steal. Senior Trevor Head added a RBI groundout and Freshman Ryan Behmanesh singled to score Goins and give DBU the lead an early 2-0 lead.
Junior Ryan Goins hit a solo shot in the bottom of the third to extend the Patriot lead, 3-0.
Binghamton tied the game in the top of the fifth inning, scoring three runs, two of which were unearned, leaving the score 3-3.
DBU retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth, after Senior Clay Kelly singled and advanced to second after Freshman Ben Mrachek was hit by a pitch. Enos added a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and Freshman Landon Anderson followed with a RBI single. Head and Behmanesh both drew walks to load the bases, which set up a two RBI double by Krizan. Sophomore Chris Haney followed with a two RBI single of his own and advanced to second after Kelly walked and proceeded to steal third before scoring on a balk, to give the Patriots a 10-3 lead.
The Bearcats pushed a run across in the seventh inning, after a lead off single and later scored on a sacrifice fly to close the DBU lead to 10-4.
DBU added two more runs in the seventh, after Behmanesh and Haney both singled and Mrachek followed with a RBI single. The Patriots added another run in the eighth inning after Goins doubled and scored on a RBI single by Head, who later scored on a fielder's choice by Sophomore Josh Wilson. Haney and Behmanesh also added singles and Freshman Jerrod Eigsti added a RBI double to take the score to 15-4.
The Patriots are back in action on Tuesday February 24, 2009, as they travel to Ft. Worth, Texas, to take on the Horned Frogs from TCU. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
