Patriot’s Bats Remain Hot in 14-7 Win

The DBU Patriot Baseball team swept the two-game series against the University of Louisiana-Monroe after winning the Wednesday afternoon game by the score of 14-7 at Patriot Field. DBU improves to 12-3 on the season, while the Warhawks fall to 10-8.

Junior Victor Black improved to 3-0 on the season, after pitching six and a third innings, allowing six runs, five earned on six hits, while striking out two and walking four.

The Warhawks started off the game with a single and double to put runners on second and third base with no outs, but Black was able to work out of the game, without allowing a run.

The Patriots did not waste anytime getting on the board, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the first. Junior Austin Knight singled to set up a two-run homerun by Junior Ryan Goins. Senior Trevor Head followed with a single, Junior Ryan Thompson was hit by a pitch and Senior Brandon Bantz was walked to load the bases. Junior Travis Meiners, making his first start of the season, added a three RBI double to give DBU an early 5-0 lead.

In the Patriot second, Knight walked and Head singled to left. Thompson drew a walk to load the bases, which set up a grand slam homerun by Sophomore Jason Krizan, increasing the lead to 9-0.

DBU added three more runs in the third. Freshman Landon Anderson had a base hit bunt and Junior Ryan Enos followed with a homerun over the right field wall, aided by the ULM rightfielder. Goins followed with a double and scored on a RBI single by Head, making the score 12-0.

Thompson added a solo homerun in the fourth to push the score to 13-0.

Louisiana-Monroe managed to score two runs in the fifth inning, off of back to back homeruns, which were the first hits off of Black since the first. Monroe added one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to leave the score 13-6.

DBU added another run in the seventh inning on a solo homerun by Knight, increasing their lead to 14-6.

The Warhawks added an unearned run in the ninth off of Freshman Michael Smith, who pitched the final two and two-thirds innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits and three strikeouts.

DBU is back in action when they host the University of Minnesota in a three game series at Patriot Field, beginning on Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m.
