Patriots Downed by Gophers

The DBU Patriots fall to 12-5 on the season as they were defeated by the Gophers from the University of Minnesota on Friday night, 15-3. The Gophers improved to 12-6 with the win.

Starting pitcher Junior Ryan Millard is stuck with the loss moving him to 1-2 on the year. Millard pitched five innings allowing nine runs on eleven hits with five strikeouts. Freshman Michael Smith allowed six runs on five hits in the sixth before Junior Brett Wade and Freshman Chris Taylor closed out the night with a scoreless seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.

The Gophers led off the game putting up two runs on the board of Millard.

The Patriots answered the Gopher call scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning off a Sophomore Jason Krizan three run homerun over the wall in right center scoring Juniors Ryan Enos and Ryan Goins on the play to give the Patriots their only lead of the game, 3-2.

The Gophers were quick to respond as they scored three runs in the third off Millard, one earned and two unearned, three in the fourth, and one more in the fifth jumping ahead of the Patriots, 9-3.

The Patriots struggled to get a run going against the Minnesota pitchers as DBU was shutout for the remainder of the game producing only five hits on the night.

The Gophers rallied to push across six runs in the top of the sixth off of Smith to finish off the Patriots in the second game of the three game series, 15-3.

The Patriots are back in action tomorrow at Patriot Field for a third and final game of the weekend series against the University of Minnesota Gophers. The first pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
