Black Shuts Down Bearkats 4-1

The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Baseball team improved to 16-7 on the season, with a 4-1 victory on Tuesday night against the Sam Houston State Bearkats at Patriot Field.

Starting pitcher Junior Victor Black improved to 4-1 on the season, pitching seven innings allowing only one run on four hits and striking out 11 Bearkat batters. Freshman Ryan Behmanesh added a scoreless eighth in relief, then Sophomore Chris Haney stepped in to finish off the Bearkats and grab his fourth save of the season.

Leading the Patriots at the plate was Senior Brandon Bantz who went 2 for 3 on the night with two singles and a walk.

DBU did not waste any time getting on the board, scoring three runs in the first inning. Junior Ryan Enos lead off the game with his third leadoff homerun of the season, a solo shot to right. Juniors Ryan Thompson and Ryan Goins each singled and Sophomore Jason Krizan added a RBI groundout. Senior Trevor Head followed with a RBI single to score Goins, giving the Patriots an early 3-0 lead.

The Bearkats managed one run in the top of the second inning on a double by Ryan Mooney and a RBI single by Tyler Lundy, closing the score to 3-1.

The Patriots increased their lead in the top of the third inning, after Goins singled and later scored on a fielder's choice by Krizan, leaving the score 4-1.

Behmanesh and Haney added two innings in relief to fend on the Bearkat attack to capture a win, 4-1.

The Patriots are back in action on Wednesday, April 1, as they travel to Houston, Texas, to take on the Rice University Owls. The first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
