Big Innings Cost Patriots Against Rice

The DBU Patriots fell to 5-3 on the season, losing to the Rice University Owls on Wednesday night, by the score of 13-6, at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas.

The Patriots were led at the plate by Junior Austin Knight as he had three RBI on the night hitting two singles. Junior Ryan Enos hit a two-run homerun and had one walk on the night and Senior Trevor Head added a solo homerun.

Freshman Ben Palmer was given the loss, moving to 0-1 on the season. Andrew Benak picked up the win for the Owls, improving to 1-0 on the season.

Starting pitcher for the Patriots, Junior Victor Black, pitched five innings allowing three runs on five hits, striking out five.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Patriots opened up the scoring by putting two runs on the board when Freshman Ryan Behmanesh walked and Senior Clay Kelly reached on a fielder's choice to move Behmanesh to second. Enos followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and Junior Austin Knight added a two RBI single to grab the lead, 2-0.

The Owls managed to score three runs off Black in the fifth on a hit by pitch and a walk, followed by a RBI double and two singles, to move ahead of the Patriots 3-2.

The Patriots answered in the sixth inning, on a two-run homerun by Enos to right center scoring Kelly, who singled to start the inning, leaving the score 4-3.

Rice pushed across four runs, two earned, in the top of the seventh off of DBU reliever Freshman Ben Palmer to take a 7-4 lead.

The Owls added four more runs in the eighth off of reliever Junior Brett Wade to extend their lead to 11-4.

Patriot Senior Trevor Head hit a solo homerun to left field in the eighth, before the Owls added two more in the ninth off of reliever Junior Michael LaCourse. The Patriots added one more in the ninth as Knight singled up the middle scoring Enos to end the night with a loss, 13-5.

The Patriots are back in action on Friday, March 6, as they welcome Oakland University to Patriot Field. The first pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
