Patriots Win Extra Inning Battle In Walk-Off Fashion

The DBU Patriots improved to 6-3 on the season as they defeated the Oakland University Grizzlies 12-9 in extra innings, at Patriot Field on Friday afternoon. The Grizzlies fell to 1-5 on the season.

Starting pitcher Junior Jared Stafford allowed six runs on seven hits, three earned and three unearned through seven innings. Sophomore Chris Haney added three innings in relief to pick up the win allowing three runs on four hits, moving to 2-0 on the season.

Leading the Patriots at the plate was Junior Ryan Enos who went 2 for 3 with one homerun, three RBI, and two walks.

The Patriots raced out to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning. Junior Ryan Thompson smashed a solo homerun to center field to start things off. Junior Austin Knight then added a two RBI single up the middle scoring Senior Brandon Bantz and Freshman Ben Mrachek. The Patriots pushed one more across as Junior Ryan Goins hit an RBI single scoring Senior Clay Kelly, who reached on a catcher's interference.

The Grizzlies managed to get three runs off of Stafford in the third to get within reach of the Patriots making the score 4-3.

Haney hit a solo homerun in the third to extend the Patriots lead. The Patriots added two more in the fourth when Junior Ryan Enos hit a two run homerun to left field, which made the score 7-3.

The Grizzlies cut the lead to 7-4 after they pushed a run across the plate in the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, DBU added a pair of runs as Knight and Enos each had an RBI single, scoring Mrachek and Kelly leaving the score 9-4.

Two more came across the plate for the Grizzlies in the top of the sixth, and then a three run homerun off Haney in the ninth tied the game, 9-9 to force extra innings.

In the bottom of the tenth, the Patriots answered when Senior Trevor Head belted a three run walk-off homerun over the left field wall scoring Kelly and Enos to finish off the Grizzlies, 12-9.

The Patriots are back in action at Patriot field on Saturday as they welcome back the Oakland Grizzlies for a double header. The first pitch is slated for 12:00.
