The Dallas Baptist University Patriots Baseball Team suffered their third straight loss on Monday afternoon at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas, as they were defeated by the UT-San Antonio Roadrunners by the score of 4-3.
Starting pitcher Junior Chris McMullen was stuck with the loss dropping his record to 5-2 on the year. McMullen pitched seven innings allowing four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Freshman Michael Smith stepped in and pitched one scoreless inning to end the game allowing only one hit while striking out one Roadrunner batter. Matt Crocker picked up the win as he pitched three and one third innings in relief for the Roadrunners allowing two runs on two hits while striking out seven Patriots batters.
The Roadrunners opened up scoring in the bottom of the second inning scoring four runs off of McMullen. Ryan Hutson hit a two RBI double for UTSA, to score Aaron Powell and Michael Rockett on the play to give the Roadrunners the lead. Then Jason Mohn stepped up and hit a two run homerun to add to the Roadrunner lead and leave the score, 4-0.
The Patriots were able to break their scoring drought by putting a single run on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore Chris Haney led off the inning with a double to right center before advancing to third from a Junior Austin Knight single to right field to leave runners on the corners. Junior Travis Meiners walked, then Junior Ryan Goins forced Haney across the plate on a bases loaded walk to give the Patriots their first run of the game leaving the score, 4-1.
The Patriots were able to add one run in the top of the seventh inning and another in the top of the eight to eat away at the Roadrunner lead. In the seventh, Knight reached on a Roadrunner fielding error before advancing to second on a Kelly single to right field, and moved his way to third on a sac bunt by Junior Ryan Enos. Knight then scored on a Meiners RBI groundout. In the eighth inning, Head led off the inning by reaching first on a third strike wild pitch. Haney smashed a RBI double to left center, scoring Head on the play to move the Patriots within one of the lead, 4-3.
DBU held the Roadrunners scoreless after the second, but were not able to produce enough offense to bounce back from the 4-0 deficit. The Patriots suffered their third straight loss, as Zach Calhoon for the Roadrunners stepped in to pitch a scoreless ninth inning striking out two Patriots ending the game in a score of 4-3.
The Patriots are back in action on Thursday, April 16, as they travel to Orem, Utah, for a three game weekend series against Utah Valley University. The first pitch on Thursday is slated for 7:00 p.m.
