The Dallas Baptist University Patriots won both games of the doubleheader on Saturday and swept the series against Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The Patriots bats were red-hot on Saturday afternoon, hitting 10 homeruns and scoring 29 runs in two games and defeating the Wolverines by the score of 12-3 and 17-11. With the victories the Patriots improve to 25-11 on the season, while UVU falls to 11-27.
Leading DBU at the plate on the day was Junior Ryan Goins, who went 7 for 12, with nine RBI and four homeruns in the two games.
Junior Ryan Millard picked up the win in game one, improving to 5-2 on the season, pitching eight innings, allowing three runs, while scattering seven hits and striking out three, without walking a UVU batter.
The Wolverines struck first in game one, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning on two singles and a sacrifice fly, taking an early 1-0 lead.
DBU got on the board in the third inning. Senior Clay Kelly walked to lead off the inning and Junior Ryan Enos singled. Junior Austin Knight followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Kelly scored on a wild pitch and Goins hit a two run homerun, to give the Patriots a 3-1 lead.
UVU tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, on a two run homerun, leaving the score 3-3.
Goins gave the Patriots the lead once again in the top of the sixth inning on a solo homerun to left center field.
DBU padded their lead in the eighth on a leadoff solo homerun by Sophomore Jason Krizan to left field, his eighth of the season. Sophomore Chris Haney doubled down the left field line with two outs and scored on a RBI single to right field by Junior Travis Meiners to make the score 6-3.
In the ninth, Enos singled and Knight walked to set up Goins third homerun of the game and 15th of the season. Krizan followed with a double and Thompson hit a two run homerun over the right centerfield wall, his seventh of the season. Head added a double and Freshman Landon Anderson knocked him in with a RBI double off the left field wall, leaving the score 12-3.
Sophomore Jared Stafford pitched a scoreless ninth.
The Patriots did not waste any time getting on the board in the second game of the doubleheader, picking up right where they left off in the first game, by scoring five runs in the top of the first. Enos reached on an error to start the game and Knight followed with a double. Goins had a RBI groundout, scoring Enos and Krizan hit a RBI single to left, scoring Knight. Thompson reached on a base on balls and Senior Brandon Bantz hit a three run homerun, hit sixth of the season, to chase the UVU starting pitcher and leaving the score 5-0.
The Wolverines managed to score two runs in the bottom of the inning on three hits, including a solo homerun off of DBU starting pitcher Senior Chris McMullen.
DBU struck again in the third inning. Head doubled to start the inning and Bantz and Meiners both drew walks to load the bases. Kelly hit his second homerun in as many days, this one a grandslam, to clear the bases for his third homerun on the year. Enos followed with a double off the top of the wall in rightfield, just missing back to back shots for the Patriots and later scored on a RBI double by Goins. Krizan added a two run homerun, his ninth of the season to increase the lead to 12-2.
The Wolverines added a solo homerun in the fourth inning, but Goins added a solo homerun of his own, his fifth in two days and 16th of the season, leaving the score 13-3.
UVA scored four runs in the fifth inning on two singles, a walk and a homerun, to make the score 13-7.
The Patriots responded with two runs in the sixth inning. Meiners doubled and scored on a RBI double by Enos, who scored on a RBI single by Knight, making the score 15-7.
The Wolverines were able to close the DBU lead to 15-8 on a double and an error in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Bantz added his second homerun of the day and seventh of the season in the seventh inning, a two run blast to right center scoring Thompson, who had walked. UVU added another run in the bottom of the inning, after a lead off triple.
Freshman Michael Smith improved to 3-0 on the season, picking up the win, after pitching three and a third innings, allowing two runs, one earned on two hits and stirking out three. Freshman Ryan Behmanesh pitched the ninth, allowing two runs on two walks, a single and a double, making the final score 17-11.
The Patriots are back in action on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 when they travel to Conway, Arkansas, to take on the University of Central Arkansas Bears.
