Millard Leads Patriots Past Huskies

The Dallas Baptist University Patriots improved to 17-8 on the season as they defeated the Houston Baptist University Huskies on Thursday night by the score of 9-6. With the loss, the Huskies fall to 2-21 on the year.

Starting pitcher Junior Ryan Millard picked up a win improving to 3-2 on the year. Millard pitched a no-hitter through four innings and held the Huskies scoreless through seven. Millard finished the night pitching eight innings allowing only one run on three hits while striking out ten Husky batters in the win. Freshman Chris Taylor and Junior Michael LaCourse combined for an inning in relief allowing five runs on three hits and walking four batters.

Leading the Patriots at the plate was Senior Trevor Head as he went 3 for 5 on the night hitting one double and two singles with two RBI.

The Patriots started the game out on fire scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab an early lead on the Huskies. Junior Travis Meiners started things off hitting a single to left field to reach first base. Junior Ryan Goins walked then Senior Trevor Head hit a single to left field to load the bases for Junior Ryan Thompson. Thompson stepped up to the plate and hit a RBI single scoring Meiners. Sophomore Chris Haney hit a single to left pushing Goins across the plate to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead going into the second.

DBU scored five runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead. Junior Austin Knight led off the inning with a single to right field and then scored when Freshman Landon Anderson smashed a RBI triple to right field. Junior Ryan Enos hit a RBI single pushing Anderson across on the play to score another. Meiners reached on a Husky error then Goins walked to load the bases for the Patriots. Head hit a two RBI double to left center field scoring Meiners and Enos on the play. Then Thompson hit an RBI single scoring Goins on the play and giving the Patriots a 7-0 lead.

The Huskies could not stop the bleeding, as the Patriots added one run in the third and another in the fourth inning leaving the score, 9-0. In the third, Knight walked then scored on a single by Goins, and then Haney walked before scoring off a RBI double by Knight in the fourth.

The Huskies were able to find life in the top of the eighth inning scoring one run off of Millard and then turned around in the ninth to score five runs off Patriot relief pitchers Taylor and LaCourse. The Patriots regrouped and finished off Houston Baptist in a score of 9-6.

The Patriots are back in action at Patriot Field tomorrow when they welcome back the Houston Baptist Huskies for the second game of the three game series. The first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
