The Dallas Baptist University Patriots improved to 28-11 on Friday as they swept the afternoon doubleheader at Patriot Field against the University of Northern Colorado Bears. The Patriots won the first game by the score of 14-8, and completed the sweep by winning the second game by a score of 11-1. .
Starting pitcher in game one Junior Ryan Millard pitched three and two thirds innings allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out one Bear batter. Freshman Michael Smith picked up the win improving his record to 4-0 on the season as he pitched five and one third innings in relief to finish off the Bears.
Leading the Patriots at the plate in the first game was Freshman Landon Anderson who went 4 for 4 hitting one double, three singles, and adding two RBI. Anderson also had one walk in the win.
Northern Colorado opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning when Phil Santucci hit a solo homerun before Tyler Borzileri stepped to the plate and hit a two run homerun to give the Bears the early lead, 3-0.
The Patriots responded in the bottom of the second inning when Sophomore Jason Krizan belted a solo homerun, his 10th of the season, over the wall in left center field leaving the score, 3-1.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Patriots captured the lead from the Bears scoring three runs. Anderson led off the inning with a walk, then advanced to third on a Junior Ryan Enos single to right field leaving runners on first and third for Junior Austin Knight. Knight hit a two RBI single, scoring Anderson and Enos on the play. Junior Ryan Goins hit a RBI single to right field to score Knight for the third run of the inning to leave the score, 4-3, in favor of the Patriots.
The Bears answered in the top of the fourth inning as they pushed across two runs. Casey Coy hit a solo homerun to lead off the inning, then Adam Hilker hit a RBI single to score their second run.
Northern Colorado scored a single run in the top of the fifth inning on a Adrian Schenk sacrifice fly to right field off of Smith.
The Patriots answered with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Junior Travis Meiners crushed a three run homerun, his fourth of the season, scoring Krizan and Goins. Krizan reached on a double to left field and Goins walked to reach base. Senior Trevor Head walked, then Anderson stepped up to the plate and hit a single. Enos hit a RBI single to right field, scoring Head for the fourth run of the inning with Anderson scoring on a Bears throwing error to leave the score, 10-6.
The Bears managed to score two runs in the top of the sixth off of Smith with Erik Hegstad and Kevin Sandberg each hitting solo homeruns.
DBU responded with three runs in the sixth inning as Krizan led off with a solo homerun, his 11th of the season and second of the game, over the wall in left center field. Meiners and Junior Ryan Thompson crossed the plate for the Patriots off RBI singles by Sophomore Chris Haney and Anderson to extend their lead, 13-8.
The Patriots added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth inning scoring a single run. Meiners led off the inning with a single to second base and advanced to second on a Bears wild pitch. Anderson hit a RBI single to score Meiners ending the game with the Patriots coming out victorious, 14-8.
In the second game, starting pitcher Victor Black picked up the win improving his record to 6-2 on the season. Black pitched seven innings allowing only one run on four hits. Black struck out 14 Bears batters in the win to break the school record of 13 in a seven inning game.
Leading the Patriots at the plate during the second game was Meiners who went 3 for 4 hitting three singles adding two RBI in the win.
The Patriots took an early lead scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning. Enos singled to lead off the inning. Knight reached first on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a Bears error, moving Enos to third base on the play. Goins walked to load the bases for Meiners who hit a RBI single to center field to score Enos and give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.
The Bears managed one run in the top of the fourth inning when Erik Hegstad hit a solo homerun off of Black to tie the game, 1-1.
The Patriots answered in the bottom of the inning as they went on to score eight runs on seven hits. Krizan smashed a solo homerun, his 12th of the season and third on the day, to lead off the inning and give the Patriots the lead, 2-1. Thompson and Senior Brandon Bantz both hit singles to reach base before Head walked to load the bases. Anderson hit a two RBI single to left field, scoring Bantz and Thompson on the play. Enos hit a RBI groundout to score Head for the fourth run of the inning. Knight followed with a walk, leaving runners on first and third base. Knight walked, then Goins hit a RBI single through the right side scoring Anderson on the play. Krizan reached base on a fielder's choice as Knight scored for the sixth run of the inning. Thompson capped off the scoring frenzy for the Patriots with a two RBI double to left field, which scored Krizan and Goins, leaving the score 9-1.
DBU added one run in the fifth inning, and another in the sixth to extend their lead and finish off the Bears in a seven inning game, 11-1. In the fifth, Enos hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Bantz after reaching base on a single to left field. Goins crossed the plate in the sixth on a Meiners single through the right side after reaching base on a Bears error.
The Patriots are back in action at Patriot Field tomorrow afternoon as they welcome back the Bears from the University of Northern Colorado for the third and final game of the series. The first pitch is slated for 12:00 noon.
