The Dallas Baptist University Patriots Baseball Team improved to 30-11 for the season on Monday afternoon in Nacogdoches, Texas, as they defeated Stephen F. Austin University by the score of 12-8.
Starting pitcher Freshman Ben Palmer pitched one and two thirds innings allowing five runs on eight hits. Senior Kevin Aduddell stepped in and pitched two and one third innings in relief and allowed only one run on four hits. Sophomore Josh Wilson pitched two thirds of an inning before Sophomore Chris Haney added two and one third innings. Haney picked up the win on the day improving his record to 4-2 on the season, as he allowed only one run on two hits in the outing. Freshman Ryan Behmanesh finished off the Lumberjacks to pick up his first save of the season. Behmanesh pitched two scoreless innings allowing four hits, while striking out three batters.
Leading the Patriots at the plate was Junior Ryan Goins who went 4 for 4 in the win, hitting one double and three singles. Goins also had two walks on the day.
The Patriots opened up the scoring early as they put one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Junior Ryan Enos doubled off the left field wall to lead off the inning and then advanced to third base on a Junior Austin Knight groundout. Goins walked, then stole second base to leave runners on second and third. Enos then was pushed across the plate on a Sophomore Jason Krizan RBI groundout to give the Patriots the lead, 1-0.
The 'Jacks responded in the bottom of the third inning, scoring three runs off of Palmer on four straight hits to start the game.
SFA added two more runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 5-1 when the top of the lineup for the 'Jacks hit four straight for the second inning in a row.
The Patriots dug themselves out of a slight hole in the top of the third inning scoring three runs on the 'Jacks defense. Knight and Goins led off the inning with a pair of walks to reach base. Krizan hit a RBI single to center field to score Knight. Junior Ryan Thompson walked to load the bases for the Patriots before Freshman Landon Anderson hit a two RBI single through the left side, scoring Goins and Krizan on the play and leaving the score, 5-4.
SFA added a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning, and another in the bottom of the fifth before the Patriots answered with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Senior Clay Kelly singled to lead off the inning and went on to score on a Krizan RBI single through the right side after a Knight walk and Goins single. Junior Travis Meiners reached on a fielder's choice scoring Knight for the second run of the inning to leave the score, 7-6, in favor of SFA.
The 'Jacks managed one run in the bottom of the sixth inning before the Patriot's bats caught fire as they went on to score six runs in the last three innings to finish off SFA by the score of 12-8.
In the seventh inning, Kelly knocked Anderson in on a sacrifice fly who reached on a walk. Enos smashed a two run homerun, his 14th of the season, over the right field wall to give the Patriots the lead, 9-8.
Kelly hit a RBI single to left center field to score Anderson in the top of the eighth inning. Anderson reached on a walk. Meiners added a RBI single in the ninth inning to score Goins who reached on a single, before Knight crossed for the second run of the inning on a Thompson RBI groundout.
The Patriots are back in action on Tuesday, April 28, as they travel to Huntsville, Texas, to take on Sam Houston University. The first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
