The Dallas Baptist University Patriots Baseball Team improved to 31-11 for the season on Tuesday night in Huntsville, Texas, as they defeated Sam Houston State University by the score of 6-2.
Starting pitcher Sophomore Jared Stafford picked up the win improving his record to 2-0 on the season. Stafford pitched six innings allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out two Bearkat batters. Freshman Michael Smith added two scoreless innings in relief allowing only two hits. Freshman Ryan Behmanesh stepped in and pitched a scoreless ninth inning striking out two for the Patriots to close out their ninth straight win.
Leading the Patriots at the plate was Senior Brandon Bantz who went 2 for 4 in the win, hitting one double and one single.
The Patriots opened up scoring in the top of the third inning to take the early lead, 1-0. Bantz led off the inning with a double to center field then eventually was pushed across the plate on a Junior Ryan Enos sacrifice fly.
DBU added a single in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead as Senior Trevor Head crushed a solo homerun, his 10th of the season, over the wall in left field.
Tyler Knight was able to hit a double off of Stafford to knock in two runs for the Bearkats and tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Justin Keithley and Braedan Riley on the play.
The Patiots broke the tie in the top of the seventh inning as they scored two runs on a pair of RBI singles by Junior Ryan Goins and Sophomore Jason Krizan. Bantz singled to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a Senior Clay Kelly walk. Both runners advanced on a Enos sacrifice bunt. Goins hit a single to score Bantz, before Krizan hit a single to score Kelly for the second run of the inning, leaving the score, 4-2.
DBU scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to add to their lead. Krizan hit his second RBI single of the game to score Knight, who reached base on a walk. Goins added the final run of the game on a double steal to leave the score 6-2.
The Patriots are back in action on Thursday, April 30, as they travel to College Station, Texas, to take on the Texas A&M University Aggies in a three game series. The first pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
