The Dallas Baptist University Patriots improved to 18-8 on Thursday night at Patriot Field as they defeated the Houston Baptist Huskies by the score of 12-2. With the loss, the Huskies fall to 2-22 on the year.
Starting pitcher Freshman Ben Palmer picked up the win improving to 1-1 on the season. Palmer pitched six innings allowing only one run on four hits, while striking out two. Freshman Michael Smith came in and finished off HBU, as he pitched two innings in relief allowing only one run on two hits, while striking out three Husky batters.
Leading the Patriots at the plate was Sophomore Jason Krizan who went 4 for 5 on the night crushing one triple, one double, and two singles with four RBI in the win.
The Patriots grabbed the lead early, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning as Sophomore Jason Krizan hit an RBI double scoring Junior Ryan Goins, after he reached on a single to left field to put the Patriots up 1-0.
The Patriots continued the scoring in the second as Junior Ryan Thompson doubled to right field before being pushed across on a RBI double by Senior Brandon Bantz. Bantz advanced to third on a Senior Clay Kelly single to leave runners on the corners for Junior Ryan Enos. Enos stepped up and hit a RBI single scoring Bantz, then Goins pushed Kelly across on a RBI groundout to extend the Patriot lead to 4-0.
Kelly reached first after being hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning before Junior Travis Meiners hit a RBI double, scoring Kelly on the play adding to the Patriot lead, leaving the score, 5-0.
The Huskies managed one run in the top of the sixth inning off of Palmer.
In the bottom of the sixth Meiners, Goins, and Head all walked to load the bases and set up for a three RBI triple by Krizan further extending the Patriot lead to 8-1.
Houston Baptist scored one run off Smith in the top of the eighth, before the Patriots rallied to score four in the bottom of the inning to finish off the Huskies, 12-2. Meiners led off the inning with a single to second, then Goins belted a two run homerun over the left center wall, his eighth on the season, scoring Meiners on the play. Both Bantz and Knight hit RBI singles to score Head and Thompson to end the Huskies hope for a comeback.
The Patriots are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they welcome back the Houston Baptist Huskies to Patriot Field for the third and final game of the weekend series. The first pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
