Patriots Fly Past Golden Eagles With 5-4 Win

The Dallas Baptist University Patriots improved to 20-8 on the season as they defeated the Golden Eagles from Oral Roberts University on Monday afternoon by the score of 5-4.

Starting pitcher Victor Black picked up the win improving to 5-1 on the year. Black pitched six innings allowing only two runs on ten hits while striking out nine Eagle batters. Freshman Michael Smith pitched two scoreless innings in relief before Sophomore Chris Haney stepped in and grabbed his fifth save of the season pitching one inning to close out the Golden Eagles.

Leading the Patriots at the plate was Senior Trevor Head who went 2 for 4 in the win, hitting two singles with one RBI.

The Golden Eagles opened up scoring in the top of the third inning off of Black as Robert Barbosa hit a solo homerun to give ORU the lead, 1-0.

Oral Roberts added to their lead in the top of the fifth when Juan Martinez hit an RBI single to center field to score Danny Duffy, after Duffy reached on a double, leaving the score 2-0.

The Patriots responded in the bottom of the sixth inning as they scored three runs to take the lead for ORU, 3-2. Juniors Ryan Enos and Travis Meiners led off the inning with a pair or walks before Head hit a single to load the bases. Sophomore Jason Krizan stepped up to the plated and hit a RBI single to right field to score Enos on the play, before Junior Ryan Thompson crushed a two RBI single to center ,scoring Head and Meiners and giving the Patriots the lead.

The Patriots scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to extend their lead. Enos and Goins started off the inning with walks before Head hit a RBI single to score Enos. Krizan added a RBI groundout to score Goins and leave the score, 5-2.

Oral Roberts managed two runs in the top of the ninth inning off of Haney as Juan Martinez hit a two run homerun, but it was not enough to overcome the Patriot lead as DBU finished out the game capturing their fifth straight win, defeating ORU 5-4.

The Patriots are back in action on Wednesday, April 8, as they travel to Waco, Texas, to take on Baylor University. The first pitch is slated for 6:30.
