Patriots Blast #7 Bears

The DBU Patriot Baseball team improved to 21-9 on the season, after scoring 16 runs on 16 hits on the number seven ranked Baylor Bears at Baylor Ballpark on Wednesday evening.

The Patriots scored four runs in the first inning and five runs in the second inning en route to the 16-3 win. DBU added another run in the fifth and finished off the Bears, scoring six runs in the eighth inning.

Leading DBU at the plate was Junior Ryan Goins, who went two for four with three RBI. Senior Trevor Head finished the game with three RBI as well. Junior Ryan Thompson and Senior Clay Kelly each went three for five on the night.

Senior Chris McMullen picked up the win, improving to 5-1 on the year, pitching eight innings, allowing only three runs on six hits, while striking out four. Freshman Ryan Behmanesh struck out the side in the ninth inning to close out the victory.

Junior Ryan Enos led off the game with a walk and advanced to third on a Junior Travis Meiners single. Goins crushed a RBI double to right center to score Enos and give the Patriots the early lead. Senior Trevor Head hit a 2 RBI single to add to the Patriot lead, scoring Meiners and Goins on the play and leaving the score 4-0.

The Bears managed to score one run in the bottom of the first inning off of McMullen as Shaver Hansen hit into a fielder's choice to score Raynor Campbell.

The Patriot's bats stayed red hot as they scored five runs in the top of the second on the Bears. Enos started things off again with a walk to reach first, and was advanced to third off a Meiners double down the right field line. Meiners advanced to third and Enos was pushed across the plate on a Goins RBI sac fly. Head tacked another run on the board with a RBI groundout, scoring Meiners. Junior Jason Krizan reached on a Bear's error, then Junior Ryan Thompson and Senior Brandon Bantz each walked to load the bases to set up for a Junior Austin Knight two RBI single to right center. Senior Clay Kelly single up the middle to score Bantz and end the inning with the Patriots on top, 9-1.

Baylor's Adam Hornung hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Patriots answered scoring a single run in the top of the fifth inning off a Goins sac fly to score Knight after he reached on a walk. The Bear's Aaron Miller responded with hitting the second Baylor solo homerun of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning to leave the score, 10-3.

In the top of the eighth inning, Krizan singled to score Goins, who reached on an error. Thompson singled to score Head, who reached after being hit by a pitch. Bantz added a RBI double and Kelly followed with a RBI single. Enos forced in a run when he was hit by a pitch and the sixth run of the inning was scored on a wild pitch to leave the score, 16-3.

Behmanesh stepped in and struck out the Baylor side in the top of the ninth to give the Patriots the victory against the number seven ranked Baylor Bears.

The Patriots are back in action on Friday afternoon in doubleheader fashion against Northeastern University beginning at 3:00.
