The Dallas Baptist University Patriots Baseball Team improved to 36-15 for the season on Tuesday afternoon as they defeated the Roadrunners from UT- San Antonio by the score of 15-8.
Starting pitcher Freshman Ben Palmer pitched three innings allowing six runs on seven hits. Freshman Michael Smith stepped in and pitched four innings in relief allowing only two runs on two hits, while striking out five batters. Freshman Ryan Behmanesh finished out the game for the Patriots pitching two scoreless innings to pick up his fourth save on the year.
Leading the Patriots at the plate was Junior Jason Krizan who went 3 for 5 on the day, hitting one single, one double, and one homerun, with five RBI.
The Roadrunners jumped out to an early lead as they scored two runs in the top of the second inning.
The Patriots responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs and tying the game 2-2. Junior Ryan Thompson reached base on an error, then scored on a Junior Austin Knight RBI single to center field.
The Roadrunners recaptured the lead in the top of the third inning when Michael Rockett hit a solo homerun off of Palmer to leave the score, 3-2.
In the bottom of the third inning, Junior Ryan Goins reached on a double down the left field line, and then was pushed across the plate on a Junior Jason Krizan RBI double to right field. Senior Brandon Bantz hit a double to left field, scoring Krizan on the play to take the lead, 4-3. Thompson reached base on a Roadrunner error, which scored Bantz for the third run of the inning. Senior Trevor Head pushed Thompson across the plate on a sacrifice fly to leave the score, 6-3.
UTSA evened up the score in the top of the fourth inning, but the Patriots responded with a pair of solo homeruns by Juniors Ryan Enos, his 15th of the season, and Ryan Goins, his 20th of the season, in the bottom of the inning leaving the score, 8-6.
The Roadrunners evened up the score in the top of the sixth inning when Michael Rockett hit a two run homerun, his second of the game, leaving the score, 8-8.
The Patriots broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth inning when Krizan crushed a three run homerun over the wall in right center field, scoring Goins and Meiners and leaving the score, 11-8.
DBU added four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend their lead and finish off the Roadrunners by the final score of 15-8. Krizan hit a RBI single to left center field scoring Meiners on the play after he reached on a single to left field for the first run of the inning. Bantz pushed Krizan to second, then both runners advanced on a wild pitch to leave runners on second and third. Thompson stepped up and crushed a two RBI double to left field, scoring both Krizan and Bantz on the play. Thompson crossed the plate for the fourth run of the inning on a Head single to right field.
The Patriots are back in action on Thursday, May 14, as they travel to Jacksonville, Florida, to take on the Jacksonville University Dolphins. The first pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m.
