The Dallas Baptist University Patriots Baseball Team improved to 37-15 for the season on Thursday night in Jacksonville, Florida as they defeated the Jacksonville University Dolphins by the score of 13-1, dropping the Dolphins to 33-19.
Starting pitcher Sophomore Jared Stafford picked up the win improving his record to 3-1 on the year. Stafford pitched his first career complete game for the Patriots giving up only one run on four hits, while striking out five and walking one in the win.
Leading the Patriots at the plate was Junior Ryan Goins who went 5 for 6 in the win. Goins hit two doubles and three singles on the day.
Jacksonville opened up scoring in the bottom of the first inning as they scored their only run of the game off of Stafford.
The Patriots responded in the top of the third inning as they put four runs on the board to take the lead over the Dolphins, 4-1. Senior Clay Kelly was the first Patriot to reach base in the third inning as he was hit by a pitch. Junior Ryan Enos smashed a double to left field advancing Kelly to third base, before
Junior Travis Meiners hit a two RBI single up the middle, scoring Kelly and Enos on the play. Goins then doubled down the right field line leaving runners on second and third. After a Sophomore Jason Krizan intentional walk to load the bases, Senior Brandon Bantz walked, forcing the Meiners across the plate for the third run of the inning. Then Junior Ryan Thompson hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Goins and leaving the score, 4-1.
DBU added a single run in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-1 when Bantz pushed Goins across the plate on a fielder's choice, after Goins reached by a single to left field.
The Dolphins defense did not have an answer for the Patriots hitting as DBU put six runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning extending their lead to, 11-1. After singles by Meiners, Goins, and Krizan to lead off, Thompson reached on a fielder's choice to score Meiners on the play. Junior Austin Knight crushed a three RBI double down the left field line, before a RBI single by Kelly and a Enos RBI triple scored the fifth and sixth run of the inning.
The Patriots added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning on Head and Enos solo homeruns, and then Stafford shut down the Dolphins in the bottom of the inning retiring the side in order.
The Patriots are back in action tomorrow as they will face Jacksonville University for the second game of the three game weekend series in Jacksonville, Florida.
