The Dallas Baptist University Patriots Baseball Team improved to 35-14 for the season on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Utah Valley University Wolverines at Patriot Field by the score of 5-4 as DBU celebrated Senior Day.
Starting pitcher Senior Chris McMullen picked up the win improving his record to 7-3 for the season. McMullen allowed one run on six hits through seven innings. Freshman Michael Smith pitched two thirds of an inning in relief allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits. Freshman Ryan Behmanesh stepped in and pitched one and one third scoreless innings to finish off the Wolverines and capture his third save of the year.
Leading the Patriots at the plate was Junior Travis Meiners who went 2 for 4 on the day with three RBI hitting a solo homerun and a double.
The Wolverines opened up the scoring one run in the top of the first inning off of McMullen to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Patriots responded in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead 3-1. Meiners put the Patriots on the board when he hit a solo homerun over the right field wall. Senior Brandon Bantz gave the Patriots the lead when he belted a two run homerun, scoring Sophomore Jason Krizan after he reached on a walk, leaving the score 3-1.
DBU scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning extending their lead to 5-1. Meiners smashed a two RBI double off the right field wall, scoring Senior Trevor Head and Junior Austin Knight on the play. Head and Knight each reached on a walk.
The Wolverines managed three runs in the top of the eighth inning off of Smith to leave the score 5-4 going into the ninth inning.
Behmanesh stepped in to finish off Utah Valley pitching one and one third innings to end the game, 5-4.
The Patriots are back in action at Patriot Field on Monday, May 11, as they welcome TCU to campus. The first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
