Box Score
In his last 10.2 innings,
Cody Beam has allowed four hits and one earned run. The Dallas Baptist Patriots (9-8) used his latest five-plus innings to earn a win against Stephen F. Austin (7-8) in Nacogdoches, 5-3. Beam allowed only two hits over 5.2 innings and the Patriot offense used nine hits, including two homeruns , a double, and a single from
Michael Miller, to hold on for their fourth straight win.
Paul Voelker threw the final two innings to record his first save in a Patriot uniform.
For the second straight game, the Patriots scored in the first inning as
Jaime Garrido and
Ronnie Mitchell opened the game with singles. A wild pitch would allow both to advance 90 feet with nobody out but the Patriots almost failed to capitalize on the opportunity. An infield popup and a groundball back to SFA starter Justin Choate left both runners in scoring position with two outs before a fortuitous wild pitch allowed Garrido to score the first run of the game. Miller would give the Patriots an early two-run lead in the second inning with his first homerun of the season, a solo shot to left center field.
That would be all the scoring until the sixth when Miller once again lifted a ball over the left field fence, this time with
Austin Listi aboard, who had walked, to make it a 4-0 DBU lead. The Lumberjacks would cross the pay station once in the sixth after Beam's only walk of the evening came across after a single, a wild pitch, and an RBI groundout. That groundout would be the end of the night for Beam after 5.2 innings, two hits, one walk, and five strikeouts.
Michael Smith would relieve the big righthander with a runner on third and two outs in the sixth to retire Hunter Dozier by strikeout and move the game to the late innings.
The Lumberjacks scored runs in each of the next two innings, as well, off a trio of Patriot relievers to get the game to 4-3 but DBU added an insurance run in the ninth on a
Boomer Collins bases loaded walk and Voelker threw a scoreless ninth to record the save. Dallas Baptist will return home on Thursday night as they play host to Sam Houston State for a three-game series, beginning at 6:30pm.
