Offense Unable to Sustain Patriots

Box Score

One game after scoring 13 runs and showing signs of offensive life, the Dallas Baptist Patriots (12-11, 1-1) were unable to get anything going against two San Jose State (7-16, 1-1) pitchers on Saturday afternoon in an 8-1 loss . Starter Cy Sneed (2-1) allowed four runs in 4.1 innings and Jay Calhoun saw four cross the plate in his 1.1 innings as the Patriots have now dropped three of their last four games. Duncan McAlpine and Nash Knight each recorded two hits but the DBU offense collected only seven hits on the afternoon, all singles.

The San Jose State offense was no more dynamic than that of the Patriots but they made their 12 singles count. Andre Mercurio, the leadoff hitter for the Spartans, had four hits and Matt Lopez picked up three. The Spartans scored one in the first and two in the second off Sneed, who did not walk nor strikeout a batter in his outing. Sneed did hit four batters although only one of those four crossed the plate. The righthander was charged with his first loss of the season to go against two wins.

The Spartans broke the game open in the fifth and six innings after DBU had cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth. RJ Talamantes walked to lead off the inning and advanced on a wild pitch. Jaime Garrido and Ronnie Mitchell then followed with groundouts to score the second baseman but SJSU would respond in a big way. San Jose picked up a run in the fifth and then four in the sixth off Calhoun. That would end any hope of a Patriot rally as they fell to .500 in WAC play.

The rubber match of the opening conference series will happen Sunday at 2:00 pm CST. DBU will send Cody Beam to the mound for his first weekend start of the season. The Patriot Pregame Show will start at 1:35 pm on dbupatriots.com/showcase.
