Johansen Shuts Out Sac State

Box Score

With an early offensive outburst, the Dallas Baptist Patriots (15-11, 3-1) rode the right arm of Jake Johansen (4-2) to a 10-0 run rule of Sacramento State (13-12, 1-3) to open an Easter Weekend series at Horner Ballpark. Johansen threw all seven innings and allowed only five hits while striking out three and walking none. Four different Patriots recorded multi-hit games as DBU racked up eleven hits in the contest and broke open the game with eight runs between the second and third innings.

The Patriots got on the board in a big way in the second inning with six hits in the frame highlighted by a Jaime Garrido double down the left field line to score RJ Talamantes and Nash Knight who had both singled. Justin Wall had an RBI double to start the scoring after Duncan McAlpine singled to open the inning.

The third inning was more of the same for the Patriots and Wall was again the catalyst. His single and steal of second was followed by a walk to Ronnie Mitchell. Austin Listi singled to score Wall and move Mitchell to second and both Mitchell and Listi moved up ninety feet the next batter on a Knight sacrifice bunt.  They would score the second and third runs of the inning on the next pitch as Talamantes doubled down the left field line and DBU had an early eight run cushion for Johansen.

DBU scored again the fifth compliments of a McAlpine solo shot to right center, his team-leading seventh homerun of the season, and then scored another single run in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. Boomer Collins was hit by pitch to start the inning and the senior centerfielder moved around the bases thanks to a walk, fielder's choice, and a wild pitch to make the DBU lead, 10-0, to the seventh inning.

Johansen finished off the game, the first complete game on the season and the first shutout since Taylor Massey twirled a nine-inning shutout of UTA at the 2012 Waco Regional, allowing only one batter to reach in the seventh on an error and the Patriots moved to four games over .500 for the first time this season.

Dallas Baptist and Sacramento State will square off again on Friday afternoon with a 2:00 first pitch. Cy Sneed will take the hill for DBU and Brennan Litao will go for the Hornets. Fans can listen and watch live action on dbupatriots.com/showcase beginning at 1:35 pm.
