Baseball Overcome By Lumberjacks at Horner

Box Score

The Dallas Baptist Patriots (20-17) stepped away from Western Athletic Conference action on Tuesday night to host Stephen F. Austin (19-17) and fell to the Lumberjacks, 8-3. The Patriot offense managed ten hits off SFA pitching while five different DBU pitchers surrendered fourteen on the night, six of which went for extra bases. The struggle for the Patriots was their two for eight mark with men in scoring position and three for twelve with men on base. Drew Smith (0-1) was handed the loss in his first career start while Cameron Gann (3-4) picked up the win for SFA.

On the night, Smith, a freshman, threw three innings and gave up two earned runs – both in his first inning of work. He was relieved by fellow freshman Cory Taylor who struck out five in his 2.2 innings of work but also allowed two runs, as did righthander Brandon Koch in less than an inning on the mound while Joseph Shaw finished the game for DBU. He allowed two runs, as well, in 2.2 innings. The only non-freshman to pitch in the game for the Patriots was lefthander Aaron Gilbreath, who walked the only batter he faced on the evening.

The Patriot offense was just never able to get anything going against five different SFA hurlers. Gann threw five innings of scoreless baseball to start the game for the Lumberjacks and DBU managed only single runs in three different frames off the bullpen corps from Nacogdoches.  Chane Lynch homered for the second straight game, a solo shot over the batters' eye in centerfield, after Duncan McAlpine picked up the first Dallas Baptist RBI on a bases loaded sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. For Lynch, it was his second homerun in as many games this season against SFA and his third on the year. Boomer Collins had the other Patriot RBI with a sacrifice fly in the ninth to score Lynch, who had doubled and advanced to third on a KJ Alexander infield single.

The Patriots will look to get back to their winning ways on Friday as they travel to Bakersfield, California, to take on WAC-leading CSU-Bakersfield at 8:00 pm. Jake Johansen will throw game one of the three-game series with all three games set to be broadcast at dbupatriots.com/showcase.
