Miscues Lead to Loss at Bakersfield

Box Score

A combination of free passes, hits allowed, and fielding miscues for the Dallas Baptist Patriots (20-19, 7-7) led to a 10-4 loss at CSU-Bakersfield (27-13, 11-3) in the second game of a three-game series. Cy Sneed (2-3) was handed the loss for the Patriots  while Michael Miller and Chane Lynch paced the offense with two hits apiece. Paul Voelker did the lion's share of the work on the mound for DBU in relief as he threw four innings and allowed only one earned run.

After Bakersfield took an early lead in the second inning with back-to-back doubles, DBU answered with a run of their own in the third. Nash Knight walked to lead off the inning and Jaime Garrido followed with a hit by pitch. Boomer Collins then laced a ball – but right at Tyler Shryock, the Roadrunner shortstop, who converted a 6-4-3 double play to move Knight to third. After a Ronnie Mitchell walk, Michael Miller picked up a two-out RBI with a sharp single to right to avoid wasting the leadoff walk to Knight.

CSUB would score multiple runs in each of the next two innings as they placed two on the board in the third and three in the fourth, ending the night for Sneed and his replacement, Aaron Gilbreath, in the process. Sneed completed 3.1 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits while Gilbreath threw 0.1 inning and walked two in allowing one run. DBU got one of those runs back in the fourth as Chane Lynch continued his hot hitting with a homerun to open the frame, his third straight game with a round tripper and fourth on the season.

As the Bakersfield sun set midway through the game, the DBU defense did itself no favors. The Patriots ended the game with four errors, which caused three of the four runs that crossed against Paul Voelker in his four innings of relief to be unearned. The four miscues, couple with 13 hits and six walks, spelled disaster for the visitors on this night. The loss for the Patriots is their third straight and their fourth in their last five games. They will try to break that spell on Sunday in the final game of the series with a 2:00 pm start. Cody Beam will get the start for DBU and fans can listen live at dbupatriots.com/showcase.
