Sneed, Long Ball Power DBU to Win

Box Score

Cy Sneed (4-3) pitched seven innings of four-hit, shutout baseball on Saturday afternoon against UT-Arlington (25-22, 13-7) as Dallas Baptist (24-23, 10-10)powered their way to a 9-3 win over the Mavericks at Clay Gould Ballpark. Duncan McAlpine, Chane Lynch, and Michael Miller all belted homeruns and Ronnie Mitchell had a two-run single to account for the Patriot runs in the contest. Blake Webster and Paul Voelker combined to close out the game with all three UTA runs coming in the ninth inning. The win for DBU sets up a Sunday rubber match in Arlington.

The Patriots opened the scoring in the first inning as Mitchell walked and Miller singled to put two aboard for McAlpine. The Patriot third baseman worked a full count before sending his team-leading thirteenth homerun over the leftfield wall. The blast gave DBU an early 3-0 lead and pushed McAlpine to within one homerun of the all-time DBU career record of 45, shared by Chris Gavriel and Trevor Head.

The Patriots put another run on the board in the fourth inning as Lynch recorded his second straight game with a homerun, a solo shot just to the left of the batter's eye in centerfield, and then DBU put the game away with five runs in the seventh, highlighted by Mitchell's run-scoring single and Miller's three-run homerun to left.

For Sneed, the seven innings marks his longest outing of the season and his five strikeouts matches his high in a game since he recorded eight against Sam Houston on March 15. Mitchell, Miller, McAlpine and Lynch all picked up multiple hits on the day while Nash Knight had the other safety for DBU with a bunt single. The Patriots and Mavericks will return to action on Sunday with the Patriot Pregame Show beginning at 12:35 pm on dbupatriots.com/showcase.
