Patriots Bats Go Cold at Inopportune Times

Box Score

On a normal day, the Dallas Baptist Patriots (25-24) would be satisfied with ten hits in a ballgame. On Tuesday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas, however, only one of those hits came with men in scoring position as DBU fell to Texas Tech (23-26), 7-2. The Patriots had twelve opportunities with men on second and third and were unable to get the run-scoring hits as even the one hit with runners on those bases failed to score a run, only move him to third. Freshman Cory Taylor was handed the loss as he failed to record an out in the second inning and allowed four runs on two hits in his one-plus inning of work, walking three and striking out two.

For DBU, Michael Miller picked up his sixth homerun of the season in the first inning, a solo shot to leftfield with two outs. That, however, would be the only hit for the top three batters in the order as they combined for a 1-15 afternoon, stranding five runners in the process. The next four in the order tried to keep the Patriots in the game with two hits apiece and Nash Knight also singled hitting in the eight spot but the hits with runners on base eluded the Patriots as they stranded 14 runners in the game.

The final three pitchers in the game for DBU were a bright spot, especially freshman Drew Smith. After Taylor exited, Jay Calhoun recorded one out before being lifted for fellow righthander Paul Voelker. Voelker settled the game down and allowed only two runs in the fifth inning after throwing 3.2 innings. Smith then came in and allowed two singles, but nothing else, in two innings of work. Brandon Koch threw the eighth inning, the final one for the DBU defense, and allowed a run on two hits. He also struck out two.

For DBU, the loss is their first since the opening game of the UTA series, a series they eventually won over the then WAC-leading Mavericks. The Patriots will return to WAC action on Friday as they host Louisiana Tech to Horner Ballpark at 6:30 pm. Fans can listen to all three games on dbupatriots.com/showcase.
