Box Score
Cory Taylor tossed seven strong innings and three different Patriots earned an RBI, as the DBU Patriot Baseball Team took the finale of their series with Utah Valley University, 4-1, Saturday at Horner Ballpark. DBU improves to 16-7 with the win, and now looks to seven of their next eight games on the road.
Â
DBU broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second, as
Nash Knight scored on a wild pitch by Utah Valley starter Danny Beddes. Knight reached on a walk, advanced to second on a single by
KJ Alexander, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Trevin Sonnier before scoring on the errant pitch.
Â
The Wolverines countered with a single run in the top of the fifth inning, on an RBI ground out by Seth Rhineer. Craig Brinkerhoff scored on the play after tripling down the left field line in the previous at bat.
Â
The Patriots took back the lead in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring a trio of runs on an RBI ground out by
Justin Wall, a sacrifice fly from
Austin Listi, and an RBI single from Alexander, scoring Knight who had previously doubled, running the DBU lead to 4-1.
Â
That is all the Patriots would need, as the combination of Taylor and
Sean Stutzman shut the door on the visiting Wolverines, combining to allow just four hits, two of those coming in the ninth without producing a run.
Â
Taylor (2-0) worked seven innings total, allowing one run on two hits, striking out 10 and walking four. The reigning Missouri Valley Pitcher of the Week has now struck out at least nine batters in his last three outings.
Â
"Cory (Taylor) has been great his last three starts," said DBU Head Coach
Dan Heefner. "He gave us a pick me up today. You don't want to be on a losing streak like this one, but it's a good character check, to see what you're made of. I'm proud of how the guys responded."
Â
Stutzman picks up his second save of the season, allowing no runs on two hits in two innings of work, striking out one. On the offensive side,
Mike Wesolowski and Alexander each had a pair of hits. Knight had the other DBU hit with his double, also walking twice and scoring twice. Alexander, Wall, and Listi each had one RBI, with Wesolowski and
Daniel Salters each scoring once.
Â
Beddes takes the loss for UVU (7-16), dropping to 1-3 on the season after 5 2/3 innings of work, allowing four runs on four this, striking out one and walking four. Three relievers combined to pitch the final 2 1/3, allowing just one hit, walking two and striking out two. Brinkerhoff was the top producer for the visiting club, earning two hits and scoring the lone Wolverine run.
Â
The Patriots now take to the road for a non-conference contest, Tuesday at Stephen F. Austin. Missouri Valley Conference play kicks off next weekend, with DBU taking on Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.
