Patriots Take Series Over Oral Roberts

Box Score

Dallas Baptist overcame a 4-0 deficit through the first three-and-a-half innings to win 10-5 and take the series over Oral Roberts on Saturday at Horner Ballpark.  A five-run fifth inning for DBU (11-4), highlighted by a two-run single by Trevin Sonnier, gave the Patriots the lead for good.

Junior right-hander, Jay Calhoun, made his second start of the year and surrendered four runs over three-plus innings, before giving way to Josh Urban.  For the next four innings, Urban shutout the Oral Roberts offense, allowing just two hits and striking out four.  "I thought Jay was good today and did everything we asked of him in the start, they just had a good approach on him early," DBU Head Coach, Dan Heefner said.  "Josh came out of the pen and had great command of his pitches.  Once we were able to get a lead, he took control of the game and gave us a chance to win."

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the third, the Patriots scored their first run of the day on a fielder's choice off the bat of Sonnier, that plated Justin Wall from third.  DBU loaded the bases in the fourth and back-to-back two out walks by David Martinelli and KJ Alexander off of ORU reliever, Pepe Gomez, drew the Patriots to within one.  Following Sonnier's two run single that gave the Patriots the lead, Alexander came in to score on a throwing error on a pick-off attempt at second base by the Golden Eagles' third pitcher of the inning, Colin Hightower.

DBU never trailed the rest of the way, scoring a run in the sixth on an Austin Listi RBI single and tacked on three more in the eighth.

Joseph Shaw came out of the bullpen in relief of Urban and allowed one ORU (6-7) run on a Tyler Boss double to left.

With the Patriot victory, Urban earned his second win of the year to improve to 2-0.  In seven appearances, the senior transfer from Texas, leads the staff with a 0.57 ERA.  Shaw picked up the save, his second of the season and fifth of his career.

At the plate, Mike Wesolowski led DBU with a three-hit day and has now reached base safely in all 15 games.  Sonnier collected three RBI on the afternoon to run his season total to 10.

The win runs DBU's home record to 9-1 and it marks the Patriots' third series win of the season.  Dallas Baptist will be back in action on Monday afternoon versus BYU in the final game of a four-game homestand.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
